MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's fencing team finished 7-5 at the Drew Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the Simon Forum.
The Rangers opened by going 3-3 on Saturday, starting with victories over Wheaton (24-3), Haverford (16-11), and NJIT (14-13) before falling to Denison (24-3), Wellesley (20-7), and Cornell (21-6). Drew closed the tournament with a 4-2 showing on Sunday, which included wins over Lafayette (21-6), LIU (17-10), Cleveland State (17-10), and Detroit Mercy (14-13). The Rangers were also edged by one point (14-13) to Stevens and lost 25-2 versus Johns Hopkins.
Drew posted its top showing in sabre, which finished 8-4 for the weekend. Freshmen
Sabrina Holmes and
Ava Insinga teamed up to go 39-21, with Holmes finishing 10-5 on each day. Insinga turned in an impressive showing on Sunday, posting a mark of 13-2 that included 3-0 showings against Haverford and Wellesley.
The Rangers' foil unit also turned in a winning team record, posting a 7-5 mark. Individually, sophomore
Filiz Erdogan paced the Rangers, going 16-9, while classmate
Tala Varoqua (12-16) and senior
Bella Hatzoglu (9-15) also contributed.
In epee, freshman
Emily Varhaul turned in the team's best mark, finishing 10-20.
The Rangers continue their season next Sunday at the Vassar College Invitational.
