Erdogan, Holmes Earn Medals to Lead Rangers at NIWFA Championships

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Filiz Erdogan and freshman Sabrina Holmes each captured a medal to lead the Drew University women's fencing team at the 97th National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships on Saturday in Drew's Simon Forum.
 
The Rangers finished with a team score of 21 to finish sixth out of 14 teams. Drew placed ahead of out Rutgers (22), Haverford (24), NJIT (25), Navy (27), Hunter (30), Army (32), William & Mary (36), and Bryn Mawr (42). Temple (4) captured the team title and was followed by Tufts (7), Johns Hopkins (7), FDU (19), and Stevens (19).
 
Drew finished fifth in sabre, sixth in foil, and 10th in epee.
 
Five Rangers qualified the individual championship by finishing among the top-16 in their weapon during the morning's team competition.
 
In foil, Erdogan earned the No. 3 seed and placed sixth for the second year in a row to earn Second Team All-NIWFA honors once again. She opened with a 15-4 victory over Gabriella Como of FDU before she was edged 12-10 by NJIT's Stella Frias in the quarterfinals. Senior Bella Hatzoglu also reached the final in foil and placed 10th.
 
Holmes also captured Second Team All-NIWFA recognition by virtue of her seventh-place finish in sabre. As the No. 6 seed, Holmes opened the direct-elimination round with a 15-11 win over Lauren Prieur of Johns Hopkins. Her day came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 15-7 loss to Dila Erdogan of NJIT.
 
Freshman Ava Insinga also reached the finals in sabre and finished 14th.
 
Rounding out Drew's list of finals qualifiers was senior Izzy Anderson, who placed 16th in epee.
  
The NIWFA All-Academic Team was also announced at the event, and senior Eva Esqueda earned a spot on the team. The criteria for the NIWFA All-Academic team are overall GPA, extracurricular activities, fencing results and team leadership. Each institution is allowed to nominate one student-athlete for the award.

Several Rangers will continue their season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships next Saturday at Haverford College.
