MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore foilist
Filiz Erdogan reached the second round of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Region Championship, leading the Drew University women's fencing team on Saturday at Haverford College.
Eight members of the squad took part in the event, taking on some of the best competitors in all of college fencing.
Erdogan opened the meet by finishing 4-2 in the first round, defeating opponents from Stevens, FDU, Lafayette, and Haverford, before finishing 0-5 in the second round. She finished 30th overall.
Each of Drew's other two foilists recorded multiple victories, as senior
Bella Hatzoglu (32nd) and sophomore
Tala Varoqua (35th) each went 2-4. Hatzoglu recorded win over fencers from Haverford and Stevens while Varoqua downed opponents from Johns Hopkins and FDU.
Three Rangers qualified for the event in sabre, and freshman
Sabrina Holmes (38th) recorded multiple wins, finishing 2-4 with wins over fencers from North Carolina and Stevens. Freshman
Ava Insinga (40th) and senior
Eva Esqueda (43rd) also competed and finished 1-5 each.
Drew was represented in epee by freshman
Emily Varhaul (44th) and senior
Izzy Anderson (46th), who were each 0-6.
