POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University women's fencing team finished 5-4 at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championships on Sunday at Vassar College.
The Rangers defeated Haverford (18-9), CCNY (26-1), Yeshiva (25-2), Hunter (14-13), and Vassar (15-12) but lost to Stevens (18-9), Wellesley (20-7), Tufts (19-8), and Johns Hopkins (23-4).
Drew's foil team posted a strong showing, finishing 5-4 as a unit and 54-21 individually. Sophomore
Filiz Erdogan turned in an outstanding performance with a 21-3 record for the day, including 3-0 marks versus Haverford, CCNY, Yeshiva, Hunter, and Vassar. She also went 2-1 against Stevens, Wellesley, and Tufts.
Also in foil, senior
Bella Hatzoglu went 17-4 while going 3-0 against Haverford, CCNY, Yeshiva, Hunter, and Vassar. Meanwhile, sophomore
Tala Varoqua finished 16-5, going 3-0 versus Haverford, CCNY, Yeshiva, and Vassar and 2-1 against Hunter.
The epee squad finished with three team victories, defeating Haverford, CCNY, and Yeshiva. Individually, freshman
Emily Varhaul finished 13-8 while senior
Izzy Anderson registered a 12-15 showing. Additionally, freshman
Jessey Rejano was 8-7.
The sabre team, which earned a victory over CCNY, was paced by freshman
Ava Insinga, who went 10-11, including perfect marks against CCNY (3-0) and Yeshiva (2-0) and a 2-1 showing versus Haverford. Senior
Eva Esqueda finished 8-10 on the day, going 3-0 versus CCNY and 2-0 versus Yeshiva, while freshman
Sabrina Holmes went 8-13, finishing 2-1 against Tufts, Hunter, and Johns Hopkins.
The Rangers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host the National Intercollegaite Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships.
