PHILADELPHIA – The Drew University women's fencing team opened its 2025-26 season at the Temple University Nikki Franke Classic on Saturday at the Liacouras Center.
Nine Rangers were in action at the highly-competitive event, which featured numerous prominent Division I and Division III programs.
Drew had a pair of fencers reach the direct elimination round in both foil and sabre.
In foil, sophomore
Filiz Erdogan (4-5) and senior
Bella Hatzoglu (3-6) each reached the knockout stage. Erdogan opened the day by going 2-3 in the first round, earning wins over fencers from Johns Hopkins and Wagner. She followed up with a 2-2 mark in the second round, topping opponents from MIT and Temple. Then in the direct elimination, she opened with a nailbiting 15-14 victory over Brean Tobin of Hunter before bowing out with a close 15-12 decision to Sandra Luo of MIT.
Hatzoglu started the day with a 2-2 opening-round mark, topping opponents from Hunter and Sacred Heart, before going 1-3 in the second round with a victory over another fencer from Sacred Heart. Her day came to an end with a 15-2 loss to Isabella Paulus of Boston College in the elimination round.
Sophomore
Tala Varoqua was also in action in foil and recorded one victory – a first-round win over an opponent from Drexel.
In sabre, freshman
Ava Insinga finished 5-6 on the day while classmate
Sabrina Holmes went 4-7. Insinga started with a 2-2 mark in the first round in which she topped fencers from Florida and Stevens, then went 2-3 in the second round, defeating opponents from FDU and Haverford. She then defeated April Zuo of Duke by a 15-13 count in the opening round of the knockout stage before falling to Lydia Johnson of Boston College, 15-5.
Holmes started her day by going 3-2 in the first round, racking up wins over foes from Hunter, MIT, and TCNJ. She followed up with a 1-4 mark in the second round with another victory over a TCNJ fencer, and in the direct-elimination round she lost her first bout to Victoria Gorman of Duke, 15-12.
Senior
Eva Esqueda also competed in sabre and earned a pair of wins in the consolation bracket, topping fencers from Bryn Mawr and Florida.
Freshman
Jessey Rejano also reached the elimination round for the Rangers in epee. She opened by going 1-3 in each of the first two rounds, defeating fencers from Haverford and Temple. She lost by a 15-1 count to Lefu Chen of NYU in the knockout stage.
Also in epee, freshman
Emily Varhaul recorded a pair of first-round wins over opponents from FDU and Florida. In addition, sophomore
Alisha Bourhill-Tumser posted a first-round win over a fencer from Florida and a consolation-round victory over an opponent from Bryn Mawr.
The Rangers continue their season on Nov. 2 with the Drew Invitational.
