WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior foilist
Bella Hatzoglu recorded her 200th career victory as the Drew University women's fencing team took on an incredibly strong field of teams on Sunday at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University.
The Rangers faced a pair of Division I teams that finished in the top-25 at last year's combined men's and women's NCAA Championships in Brown (20th) and Boston College (24th) while also facing four highly-competitive Division III squads.
Drew opened the day with losses to Boston College (21-6) and Brown (26-1) before falling to Tufts (23-4), MIT (23-4), Wellesley (20-7), and Brandeis (24-3).
Hatzoglu reached her milestone while finishing 2-1 versus Wellesley. Her efforts nearly helped Drew win the event, as the Blue edged the Rangers just 5-4 in foil.
For the day, sophomore
Filiz Erdogan led the way for the foil team with four victories and went 2-1 versus MIT.
In sabre, freshman
Sabrina Holmes paced the Rangers with five wins, including a 2-1 mark against both Boston College and Brandeis.
Senior
Izzy Anderson fronted the epee united with five bout victories on the day. She registered a 2-1 showing against both Boston College and Tufts.
The Rangers are off from competition until Sunday, Jan. 18, when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational.
