PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore
Lupo Sala placed 10th among 84 competitors in epee, leading the Rangers at the men's portion of the Temple University Nikki Franke Classic on Saturday at the Liacouras Center.
Nine Rangers were in action at the highly-competitive event – Drew's first official competition of the season – which featured numerous prominent Division I and Division III programs.
Drew had fencers reach the direct-elimination round in all three weapons.
Sala opened his season with a bang, reeling off 10 straight wins, and went undefeated in pool play, finishing 4-0 in each of the first two rounds. His early victories included wins over opponents from Boston College, Penn State, and North Carolina.
In the direct-elimination round, Sala won his first two bouts, knocking off Steven Zhang of Hunter by a score of 15-8 before downing Logan Gatza of North Carolina, 15-12, to reach the Round of 16. His day came to an end with a 15-8 loss to Simon Lioznyansky of Penn.
Also in epee, senior
Eddie Matto went 2-2 in the first round, including a victory over an opponent from Wagner, before going 1-3 in the second round, which featured a win over an opponent from Stevens. Then in the knockout round, he lost to Julius DeStefano of NYU.
Senior
Will Morton went 1-3 in the first round of epee before going 2-2 in the second round to also earn a spot on the knockout stage, where he lost by a final of 15-5 to Szymon Wojciechowski of NYU.
In foil, senior
Henri Degremont paced the Rangers, finishing 7-3 en route to a 27th-place finish. Like Sala, he went 4-0 in Round One, topping opponents from North Carolina, Sacred Heart, Wagner, and NYU, before going posting a 2-2 mark in the second round, which included victories over fencers from Johns Hopkins and Penn.
In the direct-elimination round, Degremont opened with a 15-4 win over Spencer Grossman Smisek of Johns Hopkins to move into the Round of 32, where he battled to a 15-10 loss to Alastair Thompson of Johns Hopkins.
Also in foil, sophomore
Andrew Klyczek finished 4-5 on the day. He went 2-2 in each of the opening rounds, including victories over opponents from Penn State and Johns Hopkins in the second round. In his opening bout of the direct-elimination portion, he lost 15-7 to Omar Reyes of Johns Hopkins.
Sophomore
Paul Greenleaf also competed in foil and went 1-3 in the opening round before posting a 4-0 mark in the consolation round.
In sabre, freshman
Nalby Varoqua led the way with a 31st-place finish in his collegiate debut. He finished 5-5 in pool play, which included wins over fencers from Johns Hopkins and Stevens. He also notched a win in the knockout stage, downing Surya Mattoo of NYU 15-13 to reach the Round of 32, where he lost 15-11 to Zachary Tong of MIT.
Sophomore
Jason Ahlman and junior
Logan Kleva added two victories apiece in the pool play. Ahlman beat an opponent from Wagner in the second round while Kleva topped a fencer from Penn in the same stage. In the opening of the knockout round, Ahlman lost to Ethan Huang of Duke while Kleva dropped a decision to Ryan Wang of Boston College.
The Rangers continue their season next Sunday with the Drew Invitational.
