POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University men's fencing team finished 3-3 while taking on a highly-competitive field at the Vassar College Invitational on Sunday.
The Rangers defeated Hunter (25-2), Yeshiva (26-1), and Lafayette (20-7) but lost to Sacred Heart (18-9), Vassar (16-11), and Yale (25-2).
Drew finished 4-2 in both epee and foil. The epee team registered a 32-19 cumulative record, which included a 10-7 mark from freshman
Ben Koyfman, who went 3-0 against Lafayette, 2-0 versus Yeshiva, and 2-1 versus Hunter. Sophomore
Lupo Sala posted an 8-2 record for the day and was perfect versus Hunter (3-0), Sacred Heart (3-0), and Yeshiva (2-0). In addition, sophomore
Jackson Howard finished 8-5, going 3-0 against Hunter and 2-1 versus Lafayette while also capturing a win over Yale. Classmate
JP Emmert went 6-5 and was 3-0 versus Lafayette.
The foil unit went 24-21, with sophomore
Andrew Klyczek leading the way with an unblemished 9-0 record on the day. He finished 3-0 against both Hunter and Vassar and was 2-0 versus Yeshiva. Sophomore
Paul Greenleaf also put together a big day, going 8-1 and finishing 3-0 against Hunter, 2-0 versus Yeshiva, and 2-1 against Vassar.
The sabre team was paced by sophomore
Jason Ahlman and junior
Logan Kleva, each of whom finished 6-2. Ahlman won all three of his bouts against Hunter, and he also went 2-0 versus Yeshiva. Kleva also notched a 3-0 mark versus Hunter and went 2-1 against Lafayette.
Drew picks up its schedule next Sunday, when it hosts a MACFA "A vs. B" event in the Simon Forum.
