Men’s Swimming & Diving Wins Seven More Events, Captures Ranger Invitational Title

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team closed out an impressive weekend by winning seven more events to capture its ninth consecutive Ranger Invitational title on Friday and Saturday in the F.M. Kirby Pool.
 
The Rangers piled up 379 points to outdistance Division II College of Staten Island (204.5), Moravian University (68), and FDU-Florham (57.5).
 
For the meet, Drew won 16 of the 18 swimming events. On Saturday, Drew set one school record and two meet records and for the weekend, the Rangers came away with six meet records, four school records, and two Landmark Conference records.
 
On Saturday, Drew received individual victories from six different swimmers, including sophomore Thiago Silva, who lowered his own school and meet records in the 100-breaststroke. With a time of 55.64, he lowered his previous records in the event by 0.34 seconds.
 
Junior Nicholas Heinio-Widell added a meet record in the 100-freestyle with a winning time of 44.50 – one-hundredth of a second faster than his former record.
 
Earning additional wins were junior junior Kyle Talerico in the 200-butterfly (1:51.71), senior Brendan Burkett in the 100-backstroke (50.47), junior Liam Gregory in the 1,650-freestyle (16:22.43), and sophomore Hunor Harsanyi in the 200-breaststroke (2:05.91).
 
Silva also placed second in the 100-freestyle (46.49), as did freshman Marcell Hudak in the 200-butterfly (1:53.78), senior Ricky Kilichowski in the 200-backstroke (1:55.37), senior Gabe Spivak in the 200-breaststroke (2:06.61), and sophomore Issac Jeffers in the 1,650 (17:38.65).
 
In addition, Drew's 400-freestyle relay team of Burkett, Gregory, Silva, and Heinio-Widell posted an impressive showing, winning by over 10 seconds in 3:05.03.
 
Drew will now enter a 41-day layoff from competition over winter break before returning to action on Jan. 17 with a dual meet at Stevens Institute of Technology starting at 1 p.m.
