Epee Team Shines for Men’s Fencing at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Drew University men's fencing team turned in a stellar performance in epee as the Rangers closed out their fall semester by taking on some tough competition at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University.
 
The Rangers recorded a 16-11 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) but lost to Boston College (22-5), MIT (15-12), Lawrence (15-12), and twice to Brandeis (20-7, 18-9).
 
The epee squad finished the day 4-2, defeating Wheaton (8-1), MIT (7-2), Brandeis (5-4), and Lawrence (5-4). The unit posted a cumulative individual record of 31-23.
 
Leading the way was sophomore Lupo Sala, who went 10-2 while notching a perfect 3-0 mark in his final two matches of the day versus Brandeis and Lawrence. He was also 2-1 against Boston College and MIT.
 
Freshman Ben Koyfman added a 7-1 showing in epee in epee while going 3-0 against Wheaton and Brandeis. Senior Will Morton posted a 5-5 mark and was 3-0 versus MIT.
 
Senior Gabriel Leone contributed a 3-0 mark versus Wheaton while senior Eddie Matto and sophomore Jackson Howard added three wins apiece, with Matto going 2-1 against MIT.
 
In foil, the Rangers came close to a victory in two of their matches, as they were edged 5-4 against both Wheaton and Lawrence. Leading the way with five wins apiece were sophomores Andrew Klyczek (5-4) and Jason Sobon (5-7). Klyczek went 3-0 against Lawrence and 2-1 against MIT while Sobon was 2-1 versus Brandeis. In addition, freshman Nico Angelos posted a 2-1 mark against Wheaton.
 
The sabre team also came within a point of a victory with its 5-4 loss to Wheaton. For the day, sophomore Jason Ahlmanled the way with five wins (5-10) and finished 2-1 against Wheaton. Finsihing with four wins apiece were freshman Nalby Varoqua (4-5), who went 2-1 against Boston College, and sophomore Nicholas Machado (4-8), who posted a 2-1 mark versus Brandeis.
 
The Rangers are off from competition until Sunday, Jan. 18, when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational.
