Day 2 Results
BALTIMORE – Led by a record-breaking performance from sophomore
Nicholas Heinio-Widell, the Drew University men's swimming & diving team won three events on the second day of the Landmark Conference Championships on Friday at Loyola University's Mangione Aquatic Center.
Through seven events, the Rangers have accumulated 246 points and are in second place among nine teams, trailing only Catholic (299.5) in the team standings. Drew is one point in front of Scranton and also leads Elizabethtown (98.5), Susquehanna (98), Juniata (79), Goucher (70), Wilkes (60), and Lycoming (45).
Heinio-Widell, the defending Landmark Conference Swimmer and Rookie of the Year, made quite an impression in his first individual event at this year's meet. He won the 200-IM by over three seconds with a time of 1:50.03, which was both an NCAA B cut and a Drew record, lowering the mark of 1:53.59 set by Michael Ma C'20 in 2019.
Freshman
Thiago Silva also garnered an individual gold medal on Friday, racing to a winning time of 20.89 seconds in the 50-freestyle.
The Rangers closed the night with a victory in the 400-medley relay, as senior
Yan Zheng Lew, Silva, Heinio-Widell, and junior
Brendan Burkett teamed up for a winning time of 3:23.05. Drew is now 3-for-3 winning gold medals in the relays thus far this meet.
Burkett completed a 1-2 Drew finish in the 50-free, taking runner-up honors in 21.07. Also earning a medal was sophomore
Liam Gregory, who captured the bronze in the 500-freestyle (4:41.34).
Three additional Rangers reached the championship finals on Friday, including two in the 200-IM. Lew took fourth in 1:55.16 while freshman
Hunor Harsanyi came in fifth in 1:55.96. Freshman
Issac Jeffers added an eighth-place finish in 500 (4:49.65).
In the consolation finals, sophomore
Kyle Talerico led the way with an 11th-place finish in the 200-IM (1:59.78). Sophomore
Nick Shaffer came in 13th in the 500 (4:59.36) while freshman
Will Spreeman was 15th in the same event (5:02.85). In addition, junior
Gabe Spivak took 16th in the 50 (22.42).
Day Three of the four-day meet will be held on Saturday, with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals set for 5:30 p.m.
