Nicholas Heinio-Widell earned the Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year award for the second year in a row while freshman
Thiago Silva captured Rookie of the Year honors for the Drew University men's swimming & diving team following the conclusion of the meet Sunday evening at Loyola University's Mangione Aquatic Center.
As a team, the Rangers scored 681 points to place third among 10 teams and won 13 events -six more than any other team.
Catholic captured the conference title with 874.5 points and was followed by Scranton (751.5), Drew, Elizabethtown (320), Susquehanna (230), Wilkes (151), Juniata (143), Goucher (117), Lycoming (88), and Moravian (8).
Henio-Widell registered another perfect meet, winning all seven events he competed in (three individual, four relays) for the second year in a row. On Sunday, he won the 100-freestyle with a time (44.46) that lowered his own Drew, Landmark Conference, and Landmark Conference Championship meet records, and was also an NCAA B cut. In addition, he led off for the winning 400-freestyle relay team that won by nearly four seconds in 3:05.58, teaming up junior
Brendan Burkett, senior
Yan Zheng Lew, and Silva.
Silva anchored the 400-free relay to finish the meet with six titles (two individual, four relays). Also on Sunday, he captured a bronze in the 100-freestyle in 46.41 seconds to cap a 1-2-3 Drew sweep in the event.
The Rangers captured two additional titles on Sunday, with victories coming from freshman
Hunor Harsanyi in the 200-breaststroke (2:04.22) and sophomore
Kyle Talerico in the 200-butterfly (1:52.16). Harsanyi also lowered his own school record in the 200-breast.
Burkett added a runner-up showing in the 100-freestyle (45.98) while pocketing three bronze medals as well. Sophomore
Liam Gregory placed third in the 1650 freestyle (16:17.00), as did junior
Ricky Kilichowski in the 200-backstroke (1:56.00), and junior
Gabe Spivak in the 200-breaststroke (2:07.70).
Also qualifying for the championship finals were sophomore
Nick Shaffer, who placed fifth in the 200-backstroke (1:58.98), and Lew, who came in sixth in the 1650 (16:43.68).
Scoring additional points for the Rangers were freshman
Issac Jeffers, who placed ninth in the 1650 (16:58.91), and freshman
Will Spreeman in the 100-free (50.02).
