BALTIMORE – The Drew University men's fencing team earned a victory over Haverford College while facing some stellar competition on Sunday at the Johns Hopkins University Invitational.
The Rangers, ranked No. 7 in the USFCA Division III Midseason Poll, edged the No. 8-ranked Fords 14-13. Drew also lost 19-8 to Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 2 in Division III. In addition, the Rangers competed in a pair of matches against the University of North Carolina, ranked No. 14 in the overall USFCA rankings, and lost 20-7 and 24-3.
Drew's epee team enjoyed a strong performance on the day, finishing 2-2 overall. The squad earned a 7-2 victory over Haverford, with senior
Will Morton and sophomore
Jackson Howard each finishing 3-0 against the Fords. Morton also went 2-1 against Johns Hopkins, helping the epee team to a 5-4 win, and in the team's second match versus UNC. He led all Rangers in victories for the day, finishing 8-4.
Howard was also 2-1 against Hopkins and ended the day 6-6.
Drew's sabre team also earned a victory, edging Haverford 5-4. Individually, sophomore
Jack Henderson and junior
Logan Kleva each went 2-1 against the Fords.
In foil, sophomore
Jason Sobon led the way, finishing 3-3 for the day. Both he and sophomore
Paul Greenleaf went 2-1 in the team's second match against North Carolina.
The Rangers continue their season on Sunday, Feb. 1 , when they travel back to Hopkins for a MACFA "A vs. C" event.
