BALTIMORE – The Drew University women's fencing team captured a victory over Haverford College to highlight their appearance at the Johns Hopkins University Invitational on Sunday.
The Rangers defeated Fords 16-11 and faced a pair of additional formidable foes in Johns Hopkins, ranked No. 2 in Division III, and the University of North Carolina, ranked 15th in Division I. Drew, ranked No. 8 in Division III, lost 21-6 to Johns Hopkins and 26-1 in two different matches versus UNC.
Sophomore
Filiz Erdogan posted the top individual showing on the team for the Rangers, finishing 5-4 in foil. She registered a perfect 3-0 mark in foil, and she also recorded a single win versus both North Carolina and Johns Hopkins.
Senior foilist
Bella Hatzoglu also recorded multiple victories on the day, including a 2-1 showing versus Haverford. She also registered a win over Johns Hopkins.
In sabre, freshman
Sabrina Holmes led the Rangers with a 5-7 record on the day. She posted a 3-0 mark versus Haverford, and she also went 2-1 against Hopkins. Classmate
Ava Insinga was also undefeated (3-0) against Haverford while sophomore
Isabella Mosquera went 2-1 versus the Fords.
Senior
Izzy Anderson paced the epee unit with single wins over Haverford and Johns Hopkins.
The Rangers continue their season on Sunday, Feb. 1 , when they travel back to Hopkins for a MACFA "A vs. C" event.
