Drew to Host Third Annual Leanos Cup

3/4/2026 4:00:00 PM

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team will host the third annual Leanos Cup on Friday and Sunday, March 6-8.

The tournament will open on Friday at 3 p.m., when Emerson College takes on Montclair State University. The Rangers will then play host to Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. in the other first-round game.

The consolation game will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday with the championship game to follow at 3 p.m.

Montclair State won last year's tournament with a 17-9 victory over Drew while Stevens Institute of Technology captured the inaugural event in 2024 with a 12-6 victory over Rhodes College.

The event is named after long-time Drew Men's Lacrosse Coach Tom Leanos, who passed away in February 2025. Leanos built an outstanding legacy at The Forest during a coaching career that spanned four decades from 1988-2017. He earned a total of six Coach of the Year awards to go with six ECAC titles and a pair of conference crowns. He is the program's all-time leader in wins (234) and games coached (450), and he earned an additional 21 wins as the head coach at Southampton College from 1980-83. He was named to the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame in 2021, the Drew University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017, and the New Jersey Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame in 2005.

A fixture in the New Jersey lacrosse community, Leanos led the Rangers to postseason play 21 times. During his first 20 years at Drew, the Rangers competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), and he guided his teams to MAC-East regular-season championships from 1988-91. Then in 1994, he led the Rangers to the program's first-ever MAC Championship title. Leanos was named MAC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2006.

Drew joined the Landmark Conference as a founding member in 2007-08, and that spring Leanos guided the Rangers to the conference's inaugural men's lacrosse title. He would lead his team to the Landmark Conference postseason five more times and was named the LC Coach of the Year on four occasions. His 2012 squad finished 13-4, setting a team record for wins in a season.

Throughout his career, Leanos coached four conference MVPs, six USILA All-Americans, and two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. He guided the 1990 team to a final national ranking of No. 18, and he served as the coach for the South Team in the 1991 Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game.

In addition, five of Leanos' squads earned the prestigious Frenchy Julien Memorial Sportsmanship Award from the District III Lacrosse Officials Association.
