Mogambi Wins Discus, Earns Field Athlete of the Year

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Junior Zach Mogambi won his second consecutive Landmark Conference title in the discus and was honored as the Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Year, leading the Rangers on the second and final day of the Landmark Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Juniata College.
 
Mogambi becomes the first Landmark Conference Athlete of the Year in Drew men's track & field history, which is in its third year as a varsity program. He launched a throw of 47.81 meters (156-10) in the discus, winning the event by nearly six feet over runner-up Anthony Morillo of Moravian University. Mogambi also captured the silver in the shot put and the bronze in the hammer on Saturday while placing 14th in the javelin (43.18 meters/141-8) on Sunday.
 
Also on Sunday, junior Tommy Edwards placed 13th among 23 competitors in the 5,000-meter run, clocking a time of 16:12.04. Classmate Grailin Simmons placed 12th in the high jump (1.68m/5-6), sophomore Matt Ellis came in 19th in the 800-meter run (2:03.73), and freshman Nathan Charles finished 20th in the 400-meter dash (52.26).
 
In relay action, the 4x100 squad of junior Jeff Ayeh-Datey, sophomore Owen Browne, Charles, and Simmons came in sixth in 44.22 seconds while the 4x400 squad of Ayeh-Datey, senior Dylan Crain, Charles, and Ellis placed eighth in 3:34.03.
 
In the team standings, the Rangers scored 30 points to finish in sixth place, defeating both Scranton (23) and Goucher (18). Drew finished just 6.5 points behind Juniata for fifth place.
