Rangers Continue to Improve in Tri-Meet

006swmmingDrew swimming continued its consistent and impressive improvement in a three-way Landmark Conference meet in the Simon Forum with Goucher and USMMA.  The Rangers lost all four of their meets despite numerous personal bests; the Mariners won three of their meets, though the Goucher women came out on top of USMMA.

Drew's women's team may be short on numbers, but not in talent.  The Rangers won 12 of 17 events that they entered this week – including Monday night's meet with CSI – despite having just four active swimmers for today's contest.

Kati Eggert recorded one of the best 50 Free times in her Ranger career with a 26.16.  The junior won the event while setting a personal best dual meet time, trailing only her time from last year's Landmark Conference Championship meet.  Eggert went on to set a PR in the 100 Fly while winning that event by .15 seconds at 1:05.53.  Eggert also swam the third leg of the Rangers' victorious 200 Medley team.

Sofia Quintanar put in a strong performance in the 200 IM.  The junior was in third place during the third leg, but finished strongly to touch second overall with a time of 2:35.77, just of her personal best.  She did set a PR in 100 Breaststroke with a 1:22.61, good for fourth place.  Quintanar swam the second leg in the 200 Medley relay as well.

As usual, Selena Davis picked up a win in the 100 Backstroke.  The senior was just off her career best time as she won the event by more than four seconds with a 1:06.03 time.  She also swam the decisive opening leg of the 200 Medley as she gave Drew a six second lead.  Davis also took third in the 200 Free.

Finally, first-year sprinter Lindsay Root had a terrific day, setting PRs in both the 50 and 100 Free.  Root had established a 59.09 as her top time earlier this week before shattering that mark with a 57.73 as she hung with Goucher's Britt Hogstrom, one of the top swimmers in the Landmark, in the event.  Root came in second in the 50 behind only teammate Eggert as she broke the 27-second barrier for the first time with a 26.92.

On the men's side, newcomer Graham Berstler led the way by setting personal bests in the 50 and 100 Free, placing third in both events.  Berstler clocked a 23.91 in the 50 and a 52.35 in the 100, both the best put up by a Ranger this season.  John Feniello had a solid outing in the 200 Free, touching at 1:57.98, one of his best times.

Ulysses Baldwin-Beneich posted a 58.80 in the 100 Fly, his best time of the season.  Walter Bakun placed third in the men's 100 Backstroke with a 59.72, a season best for him.

The Rangers are focusing on peaking at the Landmark Conference Championships in February.  So far, the training trip to southern Florida has had the intended affect as the Rangers' times have dropped dramatically in the last week.  Drew has a very busy schedule ahead as it travels to Juniata on Friday and then to face King's and Susquehanna on Saturday before closing out the regular season at Drew on January 30th.
