Sayers Nets Game-Winning Goal to Hold Off Chargers

MADISON, N.J. (April 16, 2010) – The Rangers defeated Division II Dominican College this evening, 8-7 on a rain-soaked night in Ranger Stadium. The Chargers stormed back from a 4-0 first period deficit and eventually tied the game at seven but Mike Sayers (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) found the back of the net with 3:26 remaining in the game to put the Rangers up for good.

Drew (6-4) dominated on both sides of the field in the opening period to help open up the 4-0 lead. The Chargers were unsuccessful on all four of their first half clears and the Rangers held a 10-8 shot advantage. Scott Humphreys (Wilmington, Del./Sanford School) got Drew on the board 3:30 into the game when he received one of Sayers' three first half assists to make the score 1-0. Humphreys would add his second goal of the contest with 1:44 remaining to cap off the four-goal frame for the Rangers.

Dominican (3-7) finally got on the board midway through the second period with a goal from their leading scorer Alex Jones. Jon Bucknam (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) would answer 1:08 later with his second goal of the half to make the score 4-1. The Chargers snuck in one more goal before the sound of the first half horn to make the score 4-2.

The Chargers strung together three straight goals in the third period to pull within one goal at 6-5. After exchanging goals in the beginning of the final period Jones would strike again as he ripped a shot from the far side that got by Drew goalie Charles DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) to notch the game at seven. With the game now tied, Greg Reading would find Sayers near the top of the circle to setup the game-winner.

Sayers finished the night with four points while Bucknam and Reading paced the Rangers with two goals a piece.

Desocio picked up his fourth win of the year while he and Brad Mendelson combined to turn back 12 Charger shots.

The Rangers will now shift their focus to their final four games which are against all Landmark opponents. The Rangers will start by hosting  Merchant Marine on Wednesday night at 7:00 in Ranger Stadium.
