Cardinals Overtake Rangers in Second Half

Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 2, 2011) - Catholic University (8-3, 1-0 Landmark) scored eight second-half goals en route to an 11-6 victory over Drew (4-4, 0-1 Landmark) in the nation's capital this afternoon. Freshman Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) scored a goal and had a hand in two others in a losing effort.

In a rematch of last year's Landmark Conference Semifinals, both teams played an even first half. The Cardinals scored two first quarter goals and took the lead on senior Jimmy Sinnott's first of five scores on the afternoon. The Rangers combated with an unassisted goal by Steve Gentile (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) and came out of the first quarter trailing 2-1.

Sinnott struck again 1:30 into the second quarter and quickly gave the Cardinals a two-goal advantage. The only other goal of the half was scored by Drew's Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./Saint Joseph's) in a man up situation, cutting the Catholic lead down to one after 30 minutes of play.

McGowan found the back of the net to tie the game off an Eric Tripp (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) pass with 10:23 to play in the third quarter. A minute and a half later the Rangers took their only lead of the game when Somps found a slashing Tyler Morse (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) to make the score 4-3 at the 8:53 mark.

The Catholic offense would churn out four goals, including two by Sinnott, in a seven-minute span in late in the third quarter to capture a 7-4 lead. The fourth quarter saw four more goals by the Cardinals that helped keep a safe distance from their Ranger counterparts.

Tripp finished the game with a career-high two assists while McGowan netted two or more goals for the fourth time this season.

The Rangers will look to bounce back next Saturday when they welcome conference opponent, Scranton to Ranger Stadium. Game time is slated for 1:00.
