Rangers Escape in OT on Humphreys’ Game-winner

Box Score
SWARTHMORE, Pa. (April 11, 2012) – For the second-straight game Drew (8-3) captured an overtime win, this time clipping Swarthmore (4-7) in extra time, 11-10. Junior Scott Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford School) netted two goals, but none more important than the one scored just 57 seconds into the first overtime.

The Rangers got first crack at the cage in the extra frame when Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./St. Joseph) won his 19th faceoff. After a timeout, Drew lost the ball on a turnover just as quick as they gained the initial possession. On the ensuing Garnet clear, Humphreys came up with the loose ball in front of the cage and beat the Swarthmore keeper for the game-winner.

Overshadowed in the thrilling overtime victory was McGowan, who was once again dominant in the faceoff circle. The senior won 19 of the 25 draws and scooped up 10 ground balls. His 10th ground ball of the night was his 351st of his career, breaking the school record held by Craig Middleton C'05.

The Rangers watched a three-goal halftime lead slip away in the final 30 minutes after being outscored 7-4 in the second half. Swarthmore took their first lead since the opening minutes with a goal by Brendan Conway with 2:53 remaining in the game.

Drew then took advantage of the fifth penalty of the game by the Garnet and netted the game-tying goal by Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) with just one second left on the man-up situation and 1:03 left on the clock to force overtime. The Rangers are now 3-0 in overtime this season with wins already over Catholic and Susquehanna.

Eric Tripp (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove), Nicholas Della Fera (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) and  Somps each had two goals in the balanced Ranger attack. Junior Dominick Reda (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) registered a career-high 10 ground balls in the contest and also caused a turnover.

Senior Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) was once again clutch for the Rangers making 11 saves for his eighth win of the season. DeSocio stopped a 1-on-1 breakaway in the closing minute of regulation to help force overtime.

The Rangers will return home and continue Landmark Conference play on Saturday when they take on Merchant Marine at 1:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
