MADISON, N.J. (April 14, 2012) – Drew (9-3, 4-1 Landmark) clinched its fourth Landmark playoff berth in five seasons today with a 12-6 win over Merchant Marine (4-9, 0-4 Landmark) in Ranger Stadium. Junior
Steve Gentile (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) notched five points on the day, scoring three times and dishing off two assists.
Sophomore
Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) also netted his fourth hat trick of the season to help pace the Ranger offense.
Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./St. Joseph) won the Rangers the draw 13 of the 14 face-off attempts he took in the contest. The senior midfielder scooped up 11 ground balls, scored and tallied two assists in the win.
Both teams played a close first period, exchanging two goals over the first 14 minutes of play. Freshman
Patrick Lamon (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) put the Rangers ahead for good with 45 seconds remaining in the period with his 13
th goal of the spring. The Ranger offense created the separation needed in the second period, rattling off five-straight goals, taking an 8-2 lead into the half.
Just as the Ranger offense started clicking, the Drew defense clamped down allowing only one goal in the second and third periods combined. Senior
Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) earned his ninth win of the season making six saves.
Defensemen
Matt Tower (Havard, Mass./The Bromfield School) and
Dominick Reda (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) each had a game-high two caused turnovers.
Riley Kleber (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick),
Hutch Fisher (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and
Tom Morford (New Hope, Pa./Peddie School) each registered their first goals of the season late in the contest.
The Rangers will hit the road on Wednesday when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to take on the Cyclones of Centenary College at 4:00 p.m.
