MADISON, N.J. (April 5, 2012) – Drew (7-3, 3-1 Landmark) emerged victorious, 14-13 over Catholic (8-3, 2-1 Landamark) in double overtime, thanks to an unassisted goal by
Steve Gentile (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) with 2:43 left in the second overtime. The Cardinals staged a furious second half comeback, erasing a four-goal deficit, but fell short in extra time.
Sophomore
Scott Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford School) netted a team-high four goals and scooped three ground balls in the victory.
Nicholas Della Fera (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) and
Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) each had a hat trick to pace the Drew attack.
The Cardinals were led by Chris Fuccillo who netted a game-high six goals on 10 shots. Tyler Catalini rounded out the Catholic scoring, finding the back of the net four times and assisting on one other.
Drew capped off a 6-1, second period on a goal by Humphreys with 1:38 left to take a commanding, 9-5 lead into halftime. The Cardinals strung together a run over their own in the next period, scoring five-straight goals to take a 10-9 lead. The Cardinals tied the game and took the lead on two man-up goals late in the frame.
The fourth period saw the Rangers capture a two-goal lead twice, with the Cardinals battling back on each occasion. Senior
Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./St. Joseph) put the Rangers up 13-11 with 2:22 remaining in the game with his first goal of the afternoon. The combination of Fucillo and Catalani combined for two goals in less than a minute to knot the game at 13 with 1:31 on the clock.
Both teams remained scoreless for the final minutes of regulation and the first four minutes of overtime until Gentile finally broke the tie, ripping a shot past Catholic netminder Mark Destro for the game-winner.
Ranger goalkeeper
Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) made 13 saves including four in the first overtime to earn his seventh win of the season.
The faceoff circle featured two of the Landmark's top specialists in McGowan and Matt Brennan. McGowan won a career-high 22 of the 31 faceoffs, scooping up 15 ground balls in the victory. The senior moved into second place all-time with 341career ground balls after today's performance, just nine shy of the school record of 350.
The Rangers will travel down to Swarthmore on Wednesday for a non-conference battle. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
