Box Score KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2013) – Despite outscoring Merchant Marine (7-6, 2-2 Landmark) 7-3 in the second half, the Mariners held on to a 13-11 victory this afternoon at Brooks Stadium. The loss eliminates the Rangers from postseason play and drops them to 2-8 on the season.
Senior
Eric Tripp (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) was the high-scorer for the Rangers recording his second hat trick in as many games. He also added two assists and a groundball.
Scott Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford School),
Patrick Lamon (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and
Steve Gentile (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) each scored two goals to round our the Rangers scoring.
The Mariners were led by a pair of three-goal scorers in Joseph Purcell and Phil Walker. Both came off the bench to net six of the Mariners 13 goals on the day.
The first quarter proved to be the difference in the contest as the Rangers were outscored 6-2. After trading goals to start the game, the Mariners ripped off five-straight goals. The Merchant Marine attack did not slow down in the second period and scored four of the six goals to take a 10-4 lead into halftime.
The Rangers came out a completely different team offensively and defensively in the second half. Four different goal scorers in the third period pulled the Rangers within three after three periods.
The final period began with a goal by Lamon off a pass by Tripp. Humphreys made the score 11-10 scoring on a man-down situation with 9:52 to play. The Mariners strung together a pair of goals within a minute of each other to make the score 13-10 with 7:44 to play. That proved to be enough despite Tripp's final goal of the game with 4:50 left.
Junior
Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) saw his first action in cage since March 10
th and made 13 saves in three and half quarters of play.
The Rangers will play their final four games at home beginning on Wednesday when they host Swarthmore at 7:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
