Rangers Burn Devils, Retain Madison Cup

Box Score Madison, N.J. (February 26, 2014) – The Drew University men's lacrosse team (1-0) defeated the FDU-Florham Devils (1-1) this evening, 6-4 at Robert Shields Field. The Rangers scored the final four goals of the game to pull away for the victory.

Senior Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J./Notre Dame) led the Rangers in scoring with two goals. The senior midfielder also collected one groundball and caused one turnover for Drew in the victory. Senior captain Mike Marone (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) scored a goal and dished out an assist for the Rangers in the win.

Marone got the scoring started at 11:01 in the first quarter. The Rangers heavy pressure ride forced a Devils errored pass that fell right into the stick of Marone who beat the goalie to the upper right corner. The Devils countered at the 7:53 mark with a goal from Dan Minnich tying the game, 1-1. Senior Aaron Davis (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) gave the Rangers a, 2-1 lead when he picked up a groundball on the defensive end and went coast-to-coast for a Drew goal. The Devils scored the final two goals of the half, taking a 3-2 lead into the break.

The Devils kept the up-tempo pace going in the second half as they started the third quarter with a goal from Frank Reda at the 13:34 mark, giving FDU a 4-2 advantage. The goal tallied Reda's third of the game and the Devils final goal for the rest of the contest. Barus responded for Drew just three minutes later as he beat his man down the right alley at ripped a shot passed the goalie's left hip. Freshman defenseman Mike Lloyd (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) tied the game for the Rangers with his first career goal, 4-4 with 7:23 left to play in the third quarter. Lloyd collected a pass from Marone on a fast-break man-down clear. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied, 4-4.

Sophomore midfielder Steven Cola (Cross River, N.Y./John Jay) scored the eventual game winner for the Rangers at the 5:39 mark in the fourth. Cola collected a pass from Davis and beat his man down the left alley firing a shot passed the left hip of the goalkeeper. Barus added his second goal of the game with 3:41 left to play in the game to seal the victory for Drew.

Freshman goalkeeper Teddy Sweeney (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) got his first career start in goal for Drew. Sweeney allowed three goals while making four saves in his 30 minutes of work. Senior goalie Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) picked up his first win of the season for the Rangers. The senior goalie played the second half of the game allowing one goal and making nine saves.

With the victory Drew continues in run of success over FDU and retains the Madison Cup. Drew is 4-0 against the Devils since the rivalry was reinstated back in 2011. The Rangers hold the all-time series advantage, 19-14.

The Rangers continue play on Saturday March 1, as they play host to St. Mary's College (Md.). Drew will play the game on the campus of Swarthmore College. Face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
