Rangers Drop Conference Game to Susquehanna

Box Score Selinsgrove, Pa. (March 22, 2014) – Drew University men's lacrosse (3-4, 1-1) suffered its first conference loss of the season this afternoon. The Rangers dropped a tough game to Susquehanna (4-5, 1-0), 17-4 at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove, Pa.
 
Senior Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) led the Rangers in scoring this afternoon. The senior attackman scored two goals on the day for the blue and green in defeat. Senior Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J./Notre Dame) and Brendan Skeehan (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) each scored a goal for Drew.
 
Susquehanna jumped out early just 50 seconds into the start of the game when Jake Calder found the back of the net. The Crusaders would tack on five more goals before the first quarter came to an end. Trailing 6-0 and on the extra-man advantage Barus would score the first Ranger goal of the game. The goal was assisted by senior Al Faiella (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint). Just three minutes later at the 11:42 mark Somps scored his first goal of the game bringing the Rangers within four, 6-2. Susquehanna countered Drew with a three goal run that pushed them out ahead 9-2. Somps added one more for the Rangers before the half cutting the halftime deficit to 9-3.
 
The Crusaders continued their hot play into the second half scoring their first goal from the stick of Austin Lein at the 11:55 mark of the third quarter. Skeehan scored just 10 seconds later after collecting a groundball off of the face-off. Susquehanna scored the final seven goals of the game including four in the fourth quarter for the 17-4 victory.
 
Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) started the game for the Rangers in between the pipes. The senior goalkeeper allowed 13 goals and made eight saves in his seventh appearance of the season. Freshmen Teddy Sweeney (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Harry Litchfield (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) each played seven minutes in goal for the Rangers this afternoon. Litchfield allowed three goals and made one save. Sweeney allowed one goal and made two saves.
 
The Rangers return to action on Tuesday night March 25. Drew will host Oberlin College in the first ever match-up between the two school in Ranger Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
