Brewers Hand Rangers Fifth Straight Loss

Box Score Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 8, 2014) – The Drew University men's lacrosse team (3-8) traveled to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. this evening for a non-conference contest with Vassar College (6-5). Vassar scored four goals in the second half to take home a 9-8 victory.

Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) lead the way for the Rangers on offense on the evening. The senior attackman scored two goals and added one assist for three points in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Steven Cola (Cross River, N.Y./John Jay) added two goals and picked up two ground balls for Drew in defeat.

The Rangers started the scoring three minutes in when Mike Marone (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) beat his defender and turned the corner tucking the ball inside the post putting Drew up 1-0 with 12:14 left in the first quarter. Matthew Altman tied the game for Vassar just 30 seconds later on his second goal of the season. Vassar took a 2-1 lead with 7:26 left to play in the quarter. Drew responded with a goal from senior Al Faiella (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint) that was assisted by Somps.

Somps scored the first goal of the second quarter, just 42 seconds into the period. Shane Flattery's fourth goal of the season tied the game, 3-3 but Marone's second goal of the night put Drew back on top 4-3 with 8:43 left in the second quarter. Cola scored his first of the night just one minute later putting Drew up 5-3. Two quick goals from Vassar and Cola's second of the night gave the Rangers a 6-5 lead heading into the half.

Vassar struck first in the second half when Max Herman found Sean Brazier for his second goal of the night to tie the game 6-6. Senior captain Aaron Davis (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) countered just 30 seconds scoring his ninth goal of the season putting the Rangers back on  top 7-6 with 8:34 left in the third quarter. Vassar would score the next three goals of the game to take a 9-7 lead that they would not relinquish.

Freshman Teddy Sweeney (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) made his second-career start in goal for the Rangers tonight. Sweeney played all 60 minutes in between the pipes allowing nine goals, while making a career-high 13 saves. Senior Nat Putnam (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) helped Sweeney anchor a defense that caused five turnovers and scooped up 23 ground balls. Putnam finished the night collecting five ground balls and causing two turnovers.

The Rangers return to action on Saturday April 12 at 1:00 p.m. as they play host to Catholic in another Landmark Conference contest here at Ranger Stadium.
