Rangers Defeat NJIT, Post 5-2 Record at FDU Invite

HACKENSACK, N.J. (Feb. 7, 2016) – The Drew University women's fencing team picked up five more wins on Sunday at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational, increasing the Rangers' season record to 19-11 in dual matches during the 2015-16 campaign.
 
The Rangers defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology, an NCAA Division I institution, by a score of 15-12. Drew also downed Queens College for the fourth time this season (16-11), while reigning victorious over Hunter College (15-12), LIU-Post (18-9) and Yeshiva University (24-3). The Rangers fell to Stevens Institute of Technology and the host FDU by identical scores of 21-6 during round robin play.
 
Head coach Vincent Paragano's sabre squad went a combined 52-11 on the day, including a perfect 9-0 sweep of NJIT to propel the team to its first-ever victory over the Highlanders in program history. Leading the sabre success was sophomore Pearl Sutter, who went 15-2 against her competition and upped her season record with the weapon to 36-29. Senior Sarah Silvestri continued her successful swan song with a 15-3 mark on the day. The senior boasts a 55-17 record in sabre competition heading into her final championship season. Freshman Joy Brooks sustained her prosperous rookie season with a 7-4 record on Sunday.
 
The foil squad was paced by freshman Caitlin Kotz's 13-6 run through the competition. The rookie improves her season record to 59-22, and claims the highest win total on the Rangers thus far. Junior Kelsey Oeler posted an 11-10 record and evens her season mark to 41-41.
 
The epeeists were led by sophomore Anna Scheckel and freshman Claudia West, who each won eight bouts at the FDU Invitational.
 
The Rangers return to action for one of the marquee events of the season, the EWFC Championships at Hunter College on Sunday, Feb. 14.
