POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University women's fencing team registered a perfect 7-0 record and captured the Matt Lampell Invitational on Sunday at Vassar College.
The Rangers have now won their last 10 bouts, having closed out last week's Vassar Invitational with four straight victories.
Now 16-12 on the season, Drew has also won Lampell titles in 2019 and 2017.
Drew faced its stiffest test right from the start and came away with a 15-12 victory over host Vassar, avenging a one-point loss to the Brewers last week. The Rangers went on to post victories over Army (22-5), Bryn Mawr (18-9), Yeshiva (26-1), RPI (25-2), RIT (25-2), and CCNY (22-5).
Leading the way for the Rangers was its sabre unit, which was a perfect 7-0 while accumulating a 47-10 record. It helped power Drew to its win over Vassar with a 6-3 victory. Sophomore
Sophie Gajowskyj ran the table, going an unblemished 13-0 while raising her season record to 34-16. Drew's other three sabrists also notched double-digit victory totals, with senior
Hannah Weinstein finishing 12-4 and sophomores
Serena Mancuso and
Nzingha Mutakabbir each going 11-3.
Both the epee and foil teams put together a 6-1 mark for the day. In epee, the Rangers went 37-8 and were carried by freshman
Izzy Anderson and senior
Sophia McGee. Anderson stormed to a 14-1 performance while upping her season record to 33-18 while McGee racked up an impressive 13-2 mark, moving her season mark to 40-23.
The foil squad finished 36-18 on the day while edging Vassar 5-4. Seven different foilists competed for the Rangers, with freshman
Bella Hatzoglu leading the way with a 7-2 showing. Junior
Ashley George, junior
Lauren Miglietta, and sophomore
Assata Mutakabbir each contributed a 6-3 record.
Drew is now off from competition until Jan. 21, when it travels to Boston College for a Northeast Fencing Conference event.
