MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's fencing team won three of its five matches while competing on its home turf at the Drew Fall Invitational Part II on Sunday in the Simon Forum.
The Rangers defeated Pitt (23-4), Rutgers (19-8), and Lafayette (18-9) but fell to Denison (15-12) and LIU (22-5). The team is now 6-9 on the year.
Drew posted an outstanding showing in epee, going a perfect 5-0 on the day. Junior
Caira Blake turned in a perfect 9-0 record on the day while sophomore
Brenna Behensky (6-2) and senior
Sophia McGee (6-5) earned six wins each. Sophomore
Amira Mutakabbir (5-4) contributed five wins.
The Rangers also posted a winning mark in sabre, finishing 3-2. Sophomore
Sophie Gajowskyj posted the most individual wins, going 7-4, while classmate
Serena Mancuso went 5-0. Sophomore
Nzingha Mutakabbir (5-7) also gained five victories while senior
Hannah Weinstein (4-5) and freshman
Gianna Olson (3-2) also contributed.
Drew finished 2-3 in foil, with freshman
Nix Feeley (4-1), sophomore
Elyse Jordan (4-1), and sophomore
Assata Mutakabbir (4-5) posting four wins apiece. Freshmen
Sydney Daum (3-0) and
Bella Hatzoglu (3-7) both won three bouts.
The Rangers are back in action on Sunday, when they travel to the Vassar College Invitational.
