BOYDS, Md. - Freshman
Hayden Koh won a pair of major awards and the Drew University men's swimming & diving team tied its best finish in team history at the Landmark Conference Championships, which concluded on Sunday at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center.
Koh accumulated 60 points for the meet and registered NCAA B cuts in all three of his events. For his efforts, he was honored as both the Landmark Conference Men's Swimmer of the Meet as well as the Men's Rookie of the Meet. He becomes Drew's first-ever Men's Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Meet and its third Rookie of the Meet.
As a team, the Rangers rolled up 637.5 points - a program record at the Landmark Championships - and took runner-up honors for the second year in a row. It was the team's best showing at a non-virtual championship since placing second at the 1998 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.Â
On Sunday, Koh won the 200-butterfly in 1:49.79, over four seconds faster than his nearest competitor. He also set school, meet, and conference records in the 100-butterfly on Saturday, when also captured the 100-backstroke while lowering his own school record.Â
In addition, Koh helped two relay teams to conference titles and led off for the winning 400-freestyle contingent on Sunday. His split of 46.29 set an additional school record, edging the previous standard of 46.58 set by Jack Mahoney in 2020. The relay team also included junior
Jeffrey Crouse, junior
Harrison Neal, and senior
Josh Roberts. They were timed at 3:07.60.
Freshman
Yan Zheng Lew also enjoyed a big performance on Sunday, particularly in the 1,650-freestyle. He opened Sunday's evening session with a tremendous showing, winning the event by 18 seconds while smashing the school record by 28 seconds with a time of 16:15.79, an NCAA B cut. Lew also followed Koh in the 200-fly, taking the silver in 1:54.21.
Three Rangers came away with a bronze on Sunday: Neal in the 200-breaststroke (2:11.14), sophomore
Finn Armitt in the 200-butterfly (1:55.68), and Roberts in the 100-freestyle (47.43).
Freshman
AJ Muir also qualified for the "A" final and added a fifth-place finish in the 200-backstroke (1:56.96). Sophomore
CJ Talerico came in sixth in the 1,650-freestyle (16:54.70), as did sophomore
Jackson Diamond in the 200-backstroke (2:01.58). In the 100-freestyle, Crouse placed seventh (48.09) while sophomore
Marco Niro was eighth (48.33). In the same event, sophomore
Luke Stevens took 11th (48.59) while senior
Jake Zajdzinski came in 12th (48.89). Junior
Henry Van Note added a 14th-place finish in the 1,650-freestyle (17:47.65).
Drew's ascension in the Landmark Conference started with the arrival of Munson as head coach in 2015-16. Prior to that season, the Rangers had never finished higher than fifth (out of six teams) at the conference championship, but in his second year the Blue and Green took fourth. The team rose to third in 2020 before taking second in each of the last two seasons.
