Rangers Burned By Crusaders

Drew men's basketball hosted the hottest team in the Landmark Conference on Friday night and got burned as the Susquehanna Crusaders ran out of Baldwin Gym, 92-66, winners.   The Crusaders had six players reach double figures as they used a 24-2 run bridging halftime to win their fourth straight game and move into second place in the Landmark.  The Rangers hung with the Crusaders until that pivotal run thanks to Mike Mayes and Terrell Brown who each finished with 14 points.  The Rangers fall to 4-12 overall, 1-5 in the Landmark while Susquehanna improves to 11-6, 4-2.

After a strong start that saw the Rangers take a five point, 14-9, lead on Kyle Joyce's three pointer with 13:42 left, the Crusaders took an eight point lead into the final five minutes of the first half.  A fastbreak layup from Mike Mayes, a three pointer from Travis DeNapoli and a jumper from Joe Horvath offset buckets from Hunter McKain and Harvey Pannell to cut the lead to 35-30.  Susquehanna finished the half with eight straight points including a pair of long threes from Bryan Majors.

The guests opened the second half with a 12-2 run the effectively ended the contest.  Pannell's second straight basket off a Majors assist made it 57-32 with 16:01 left to play.  Though the Rangers, and Mayes in particular, picked up the pace on the offensive end, there was no stopping the Crusaders.  The lead grew to 26 on Spenser Spencer's jumper before Drew pulled some back.  The Rangers cut it to 17 after five points from Joyce and a nice driving layup by Brown, but the Crusaders let them get no closer as they shot 55.9% from the field in the game.

Pannell's 15 lead all scorers, though Marcus Burke, Spenser Spencer, J.T. Wilson, Jason Dawson and Hunter McKain all reached double figures.  Majors, who seemed to be involved in everything, finished with nine big points, seven assists and three steals.   Drew, which did not shoot its first free throw until the 14:50 mark of the second half, had four players reach double digits.  Brown and Mayes each had 14 while Joe Horvath added 11.  Horvath and Kyle Joyce, who had 10 off the bench, combined to shoot 5-9 from behind the arc an encouraging improvement over recent games.

Drew has little rest before facing Juniata tomorrow at 4 pm in Baldwin Gym.
