Box Score MADISON, N.J. (December 15, 2012) – The Drew University men's basketball team improved to 4-5 this afternoon with a 69-66 victory over The College of New Jersey (2-8) in Baldwin Gym. Freshman
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) led the way for the Rangers, netting 17 points to go along with a team-high five assists.
The Lions chipped away at an eight-point, halftime lead and pulled within three points on a layup by Jayson Johnson with 17 seconds remaining in the contest. Johnson, who was fouled in the act missed the opportunity for a three-point play making the score 69-66 with seven seconds remaining in the game.
After TCNJ foul, the Lions benefited from two missed free throws by the Rangers to give TCNJ a chance to tie on the last shot. Johnson took the ball off an outlet pass and pulled up on the right wing but had his shot hit the front end of the rim as time expired. The sophomore guard, finished with a team-high 14 points in a losing effort.
The Rangers trailed only twice in the contest, both times occurring in the opening minutes. The Drew offense was powered by
John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and
Luke Glass (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) who combined for 31 points. Ford hit a game-high five triples, and pulled down six boards. Senior
Lucas Levenson (Margate City, N.J./Atlantic City) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, added six points and turned away three shots.
The Rangers who have lost a few tight games to the Lions in recent years, snapped a three-game losing streak against the in-state foe. Drew came into the game ranked second in the Landmark Conference in 3-pointers made with 7.8 per game, and sunk 11 from beyond the arc today.
Drew played an inspired game, this afternoon after Assistant Coach Paul Seybold passed away on Tuesday evening. Seybold was responsible for the team's zone defense, which was played at length today in his honor.
The Rangers will be on the road after Christmas when they participate in the Red Robin Holiday Tournament hosted by DeSales on Saturday, December 29
th and Sunday, December 30
th in Allentown, Pa.
