Devils Stun Rangers in OT

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (December 5, 2012) – Fairleigh Dickinson (2-4) erased an eight-point deficit with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, forced overtime and defeated the Drew men's basketball team (3-5) by the score of 86-80 in the annual “Battle of Madison Ave” this evening in Ferguson Recreation Center.

The miraculous comeback by the Devils ended with a 35-foot, three-pointer by Kevin Furlong as time expired in regulation to force overtime. The annual battle of the cross-street rivals has gone to overtime three of the last four meetings. A complete momentum shift in favor of the Devils propelled them in the extra five minutes, as they scored the first six points and outscored the Rangers 10-4 to earn their second victory of the season.

A pair of good free throws by freshman Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Franklin Park) gave the Rangers an eight-point advantage with 21 seconds to play in regulation. On the ensuing possession, Mike Williamson drilled his fourth three-pointer of the night to pull FDU within five. Junior Luke Glass (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) knocked down one-of-two free throws to push the Drew lead back to six.

The three-ball would fall again for FDU, this time from Trevor Sykes with just five seconds to go in the game and the Rangers still holding a 76-73 lead. A quick foul by the Devils, sent John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) to the line for two. The junior went on to rim out his only two free throws of the night to that point setting the stage for Furlong.

An outlet pass off the rebound by Matt Argudo sent Furlong on the run to the other side of the court. Furlong pulled up from well beyond the three-point line and drilled the game-tying shot as time expired sending a crowd of nearly 600 into a frenzy.

Klinger was the high man for Drew as he finished with a game-high 26 points and eight assists. Glass was 4-of-10 from three-point land and added 19 points. The junior has now been in double figures for four-straight games. Ford was the other Ranger to put forth a double-digit effort, tallying 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

Sykes led the Devils balanced scoring attack with 21 points. Derek Hall was a major factor in the Devils 60-35 rebounding advantage for the night. The senior forward pulled down 18 boards with 11 of them coming on the offensive end. He was 5-of-9 from the floor, chipping in 16 points.

The hero, Furlong, finished with 12 points and was 2-for-4 from three-point range.

Fairleigh Dickinson has now won the last two contests against the Rangers and is 35-27 against Drew in a series that dates back to the 1973-74 season.

The Rangers will return home next Saturday, December 15th for an in-state showdown with The College of New Jersey at 2:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym.
