Mariners Halt Red-Hot Rangers in Conference Play

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (January 23, 2013) – After dropping their last two games, the Merchant Marine Mariners (10-8, 3-5 Landmark) were able to get by Drew (9-9, 3-4 Landmark) this evening, 75-66 in Landmark Conference play. The Rangers fall for only the second time in the last six games.

Freshman Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) led the way for the Rangers, scoring 16 of his game-high 23 in the first half. Klinger was a blazing, 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the 3-point line. Junior Luke Glass (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven), who came into the contest ranked third in the Landmark Conference in scoring, finished with 11 points and four assists.

The Rangers simply could not stop the inside game of the Mariners who owned a 53-32 advantage in rebounds with 20 of them coming on the offensive end. Junior Nick Sergio had a monster game scoring 20 points to go along with 16 rebounds. Sergio was able to keep the possession alive for the Mariners with eight offensive rebounds. Freshman Scott Dennin chipped in 11 points coming off the bench for Merchant Marine.

The fast-paced Mariners were able to get out to a 32-21 lead midway through the first half thanks to a 17-3 run over a five minute span. The Rangers were able to stop the bleeding, scoring 13 of the next 25 points in the half, giving the Mariners a 46-34 lead at the half.

Drew would put together a run of their own in the second half, narrowing the gap to just a point with 6:47 remaining in the game. A three-pointer by John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) made the score 62-61, the closest the Rangers were since 10-minute mark in the first half. The Mariners however scored nine of the next 11 points, capped off by a 3-pointer by the conference's leading scorer, Reed Buck, to waive off any notion of a comeback. The 6-5 Buck struggled from the floor, going 2-of-12 and totaling just eight points.

The Rangers will be home this weekend and play the second game of a men's/women's doubleheader against Susquehanna at 4:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym.
