Rangers Close Out Monarchs for Third Win

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (November 26, 2013) – The Drew University men's basketball team knocked off previously unbeaten King's College (4-1), 84-73 this evening in Baldwin Gym. Winners of three-straight, the Rangers improve to 3-1 on the young season.

Sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) scored a game-high 26 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Rangers. It marked the third-straight game Klinger has gone for 20 or more points. Sophomore Kevin-Michael Miller (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds on the night. The Ranger center was 6-of-9 from the floor and recorded a game-high four blocks.

The two teams were in a tightly contested battle over the first 20 minutes. The Rangers built a seven-point lead over the first 10 minutes of the game only to see it disappear in the final ticks of the half. Monarch junior Mike Foster knotted the game at 40 with 2:06 left in the frame. After exchanging the lead, senior John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and Klinger knocked down back-to-back threes, giving the Rangers a 50-43 advantage at the break. The 50 points is the most in a half this season for the Rangers.

Despite nabbing the momentum off Klinger's three at the end of the first, King's did not go away quietly. The Monarchs matched the fast pace play of the Rangers in the opening minutes of the second half. It was a one-point game for a five-minute stretch midway through the second before the Rangers made one final run. With 9:02 remaining in the game, Klinger nailed another deep 3-pointer igniting a 15-7 Drew run over the next seven minutes.

The Rangers were stellar from the free throw line over the final four minutes, sinking all eight attempts. Klinger had another terrific night at the charity stripe, going 11-of-13. Sophomore Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) helped pace the Rangers offense with 15 points and a team-high four assists.

King's senior Joe Caffrey was the only Monarch in double figures. He scored 20 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. The Monarchs were able to out-rebound the Rangers 50-34 but were unable to convert on second-chance opportunities. King's only produced 10 points despite grabbing a game-high 16 offensive rebounds.

Today's meeting between King's and Drew was the first since the Rangers left for the Landmark Conference prior to the 2007-08 season. The Monarchs had won the previous 10 matchups dating back to 2002.

Drew will be on the road next Tuesday when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Vassar. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
