MADISON, N.J. (February 6, 2013) – After losing the last two games in Baldwin Gym, Scranton (16-6, 7-4 Landmark Conference) outlasted the Rangers, 77-68 in overtime this evening. The loss brings the Rangers record to 9-13 overall and 3-8 in the Landmark Conference.
Fitting that tonight's game would need extra time, after the Rangers won the last two games on the final possession including a 72-69 win back on January 16th in the Long Center. Regulation ended in a 60-60 tie but the Royals went on to outscore the Rangers 17-9 in the five minutes of extra time.
Freshman Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Junior Luke Glass (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) complemented Klinger by adding 18 points and a team-high five assists. Glass was all over on the defensive end and in the process set a new school-record with seven steals in 44 minutes of action.
Ross Danzig, the Royals leading-scorer coming into the game, netted a team-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the win. Senior Tim Lavelle scored 17 points and including a 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line in overtime.
Just like the previous two meetings, the game was a back and forth struggle in the first half. Neither team held a lead of more than five points and it was Drew that came away with a 33-31 advantage at the break.
In the second half alone the game was tied a total of seven times with three of them coming in the final seven minutes of play. Danzig scored back-to-back layups to give Scranton a 56-54 lead with 3:50 remaining in regulation. The Rangers responded with a Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) layup and a pair of free throws from Glass giving the Rangers a 60-56 lead with 2:12 to go in regulation.
Scranton made it a three-point lead on a free throw by Tommy Morgan with 1:34 to play. On their next possession, the Royals would tie the game up at 60 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Brendan Boken. The game would remain tied despite each team getting a shot at the win in the final 42 seconds.
The Rangers went ice cold in the overtime period, making just 2-of-8 shots from the floor. The Royals took advantage, missing only one of their five shots from the field and iced the game with a 6-of-8 effort from the free throw line.
Huelbig rounded out the Rangers scoring adding 11 points off the bench. He has been in double figures each of his first four games in a Drew uniform.
With a 3-7 record in conference play, the Rangers will now need to win their final three games against Goucher, Merchant Marine and Juniata along with at least two losses by both Moravian or Susquehanna to have a chance at the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Rangers will play their final game at in Baldwin Gym on Saturday when they the host Goucher at 4:00 p.m. The team will honor seniors, Lucas Levenson, Pat Dorsey and Evan Elberg prior to the contest.
