Klinger Buzzer-Beater Gives Rangers One Point Victory

Box Score Huntingdon, Pa. (January 18, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball (8-7, 2-2) grabbed their second conference victory, in an overtime thriller over Juniata this afternoon by a score of, 64-63. Sophomore guard Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) lead the Rangers with 17 points.

With 3.5 seconds left in the overtime period Juniata sinks a lay-up to give the Eagles a 63-61 lead. After a timeout, Klinger collected the inbound pass from Steve Hydzik (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and dribbled up the floor and released a running three-pointer that found the net giving the Rangers a one point victory.

Klinger scored a team-high 17 points and handed out three assists. The sophomore guard has scored 15 points or more in the past seven games. Senior guard John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) had the hot hand from deep for the Rangers shooting 3-6 from the three point arc. Ford finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds.

Drew opened the game on a 12-5 run in the first four minutes of the game, which would be the Rangers largest lead of the day. Following a timeout the Eagles went on 20-11 run over the last 16 minutes of the first half. Juniata guard Jeremy Hayes scored 10 of his game high 22 points on the Juniata run that closed the half. The Eagles took a 25-23 lead into halftime.

The Eagles shooters came out of the break hot outscoring the Drew 10-3 in the first six minutes of the second half. With 13:50 left to play the Rangers cut the deficit to seven behind the free-throw shooting of Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North), who finished the game with seven points and seven rebounds. A pair of old-fashioned three point plays from Klinger and Hydzik cut the Eagle lead to just four with nine minutes to play. In the final nine minutes the Rangers outscored the Eagles 17-11, including free-throws from Hydzik that tied the game, forcing an overtime period.

Juniata took an early six point lead in the overtime period but back-to-back three-pointers from Chris Capelli (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and Klinger tied the game 59-59 with 2:20 left to play. Juniata would hit go ahead on a lay-up from Lucas Mellott 63-61. Klinger would come down the court and hit a three as time expires giving the Rangers the victory.

The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play with a home game on Wednesday January 22 against Scranton at 7:00 p.m.
