Box Score Scranton, Pa. (February 12, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball team (10-12, 4-7) dropped a tough conference game on the road this evening to Scranton (19-3, 9-2) by a score of 67-63. At 9-2 Scranton sits atop the Landmark standings.
Senior
John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored 14 points for the Rangers in a losing effort. Ford also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action for Drew. Sophomore
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory School) also scored 14 points for the Rangers. Klinger played 37 minutes for Drew making his 21
st start of the season for the Blue and Green.
The Royals got on the board first with a steal and converted lay-up. After a Drew three-pointer cut the Royal lead to two, 12-10, Scranton would go on a 7-0 run to open up its largest lead of the half, 19-10 with eight minutes left in the first half. The two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half with Scranton taking a 28-24 lead into the locker room. Sophomore
Brian McLaughlin (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) led Drew in scoring at the half with seven points.
Scranton opened the second half on a 7-0 run pushing their lead to 11, 35-24 with 18:07 left in the game. A pair of free throws from sophomore
Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) cut the Scranton lead to nine, 35-26 with 16:55 to play. Over the next six minutes the Royals gained their largest lead of the game, 47-34, but the Rangers cut the lead to just four 60-56 with 2:05 left in the game. Scranton closed the game out on the free throw line making four of their final six attempts.
The Royals were led by Brendan Boker, who scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the victory. Justin Klingman added 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for Scranton.
McLaughlin joined Ford and Klinger as the only Rangers in double-figures. The sophomore guard finished the game with 12 points and three rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench for Drew.
At 4-7 in league, Drew sits in seventh place in the conference standings. The Rangers look to keep playoff hopes alive as they head to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday February 15, for a rematch with conference foe Goucher. Drew defeated Goucher 79-74 in the first meeting between the two schools.
