Rangers Set for Semifinal Clash at No. 1 Catholic

WASHINGTON (Feb. 25, 2015) — Four Landmark Conference men's basketball teams have navigated their way through a grueling 16-game regular season schedule to earn a spot in the playoffs, with both semifinal matchups set to take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

This will be the eighth championship handed out since the formation of the conference. Five of the first seven titles have gone to The University of Scranton, while The Catholic University of America (2012-13) and The United States Merchant Marine Academy (2009-10) are the other two championship winners.

Live stats and video links, as well as a more in-depth tournament history, can be found at the 2014-15 championship page here.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for non-Landmark students and seniors (62+). Landmark students, faculty and staff will receive free admission along with children 10 and under.

No. 1 Catholic (21-4, 15-1) vs. No. 4 Drew (12-13, 7-9)

Drew's second-ranked offense has been led all season by its junior guard tandem of Mike Klinger and Kevin Herring II. Klinger leads the Landmark in points per game (18.5) and free throw percentage (86.2), and he has scored in double figures in 24 of 25 appearances this season. Herring is the premier three-point shooter in the conference, hitting 47.7 percent of his attempts from long distance. He is averaging 14.4 points per contest overall.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series 15-2 since Landmark play began in 2007-08. The two teams previously met during Drew's only other playoff appearance, with third-seeded Catholic coming away with a 71-58 win during the 2010-11 campaign, which ended with the Rangers earning the No. 2 seed in the championship tournament.

The Cardinals, currently ranked No. 19 in the D3Hoops.com national poll, had their 15-game winning streak halted in an 83-71 loss at Scranton on Saturday. They have won 10 straight games overall against the Rangers, though, including 74-55 and 82-57 triumphs during the 2014-15 regular season.

Four different players are currently averaging in double figures for Catholic, led by 16.8 points per game from freshman Jay Howard and 15.9 from junior Bryson Fonville. Each are ranked in the top six in scoring within the conference. Corey Stanford is not far behind, as he is currently 10th at 14.2 points per contest, and Stanford's 7.4 rebounds per game put him second in the Landmark.

No. 2 Scranton (20-5, 14-2) vs. No. 3 Susquehanna (19-6, 12-4)

This will be the third playoff meeting between these two squads. Scranton has come out on top in each of the previous two, earning an 80-75 overtime win in 2008-09 and a 71-56 triumph last winter. Both of those victories came in championship games.

Both were also held at Scranton, and Susquehanna entered this season having lost all nine of its road matchups in the series. That streak came to an end two weeks ago, however, with the Crusaders coming away with a convincing 74-60 win to earn a split of the two regular season contests. The Royals edged out a 70-68 victory at Susquehanna on Jan. 8.

Scranton junior forward Brendan Boken ranks in the top five in several offensive and defensive categories. He is second in PPG (17.5), FG pct (62.6) and blocks (32), and his 6.8 rebounds per contest are fourth in the conference. Defending Player of the Year Ross Danzig (13.9 PPG, 4.5 APG) and 3-point sharpshooter Justin Klingman (11.1 PPG, 47.1 3PT pct) will also command attention from the defense.

The Crusaders lead the Landmark in offensive production, and reigning Athlete of the Week Brandon Hedley leads a group of four players averaging in double figures for the season. Hedley (15.2 PPG) is followed by Steven Weidlich (13.1), Josh Miller (12.4) and Matt McGugan (10.4). All four have started all 25 games this season. Susquehanna also has three players (Hedley, Miller and Jason Dietrich) who are shooting over 40 percent from long distance.

The Royals hold a 12-6 advantage in the all-time series since the Landmark's debut season.
