Drew Concludes Record-Setting Ranger Invitational

Day One Recap

MADISON, N.J. –
After setting seven school records on Day One of the Ranger Invitational, the Drew University men's and women's swimming & diving teams broke six more on Saturday at Kirby Pool.  On the strength of those 13 new program standards, the Rangers easily won both the men's and women's team titles.  Drew tallied 268 points in the women's competition and 263 points on the men's side.
 
Mal Vishwanath (Bangalore, India), who established three program marks on Friday, picked up two more on Saturday.  She broke her own mark in the 500 yard freestyle, posting an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 5:00.30.  Vishwanath then set her fifth record of the weekend with a 53.19-second clocking in the 100 yard freestyle.  She also swam the anchor leg on the Rangers' 400 yard freestyle relay squad that set a record of 3:35.96.  Jenny Stein (Calabasas, Calif.), Jamie Riffel (New Providence, N.J.) and Eve Morel (Bourgogne, France) joined Vishwanath in the 400 freestyle relay.
 
Stein also swept the diving events.  She achieved the NCAA provisional qualifying standard with her school-record score of 272.15 points on the 3-meter board.  Stein tallied 230.75 points to win the 1-meter competition.
 
Other women's winners on Saturday include Stephanie Cushman (Brick, N.J.) and 100 yard backstroke (59.30) and 200 yard backstroke (2:09.53), Katie Jefferson (Kameula, Hawaii) in the 200 yard butterfly (2:23.41) and Morel in the 100 yard freestyle (55.88).  Meanwhile, the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Morel, Riffel, Jennifer Cortez (Belleville, N.J.) and Vishwanath took first in 8:06.37.
 
Two men's records also fell on Saturday.  Mack Fox (Randolph, N.J.) posted a time of 4:52.56 in the 500 freestyle.  In the 400 freestyle relay, the quartet of Matheus Macena (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Ryan Underwood (Etters, Pa.), Jack Mahoney (Erie, Pa.) and Michael Ma (Redwood City, Calif.) registered a 3:14.03 clocking to set the 13th and final school record of the weekend.
 
Drew also took first in the 800 freestyle relay, as Garrett Pilkington (West Milfod, N.J.), Alex Longacre (Perkiomenville, Pa.), Mahoney and Fox registered a 7:17.29 clocking.  Individually, Macena took first in the 100 backstroke (53.30) and Ma won the 200 butterfly (1:59.17).
 
The Rangers will now have six weeks off before returning to competition.  Drew hosts Landmark Conference rival Scranton at 1 p.m. on Jan. 20.
