Dr. Sherman Plato 'Doc" Young coached the Drew baseball team for 22 seasons, from 1932-50 and from 1952-54. He was selected by Dean Tolley as one of the first professors of Brothers College to teach ancient history (Greek & Roman). Young held seven degrees, including a B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan, an M.A. from New York University, and a B.D., a Th.M. and a Th.D. from Drew. As a professor he developed several unique courses on Greek history and wrote a book entitled Women of Greek Drama. He was a teacher both in and out of the classroom.

In 1931 Doc was asked to coach Drew's first varsity baseball team; however, before the start of the regular season Doc was taken ill with appendicitis. By 1932 his health improved and he was finally able to lead the team. An excellent motivator and mentor, he developed lasting relationships with his players. The talent and knowledge of his players only enhanced his dedication and leadership skills.

Doc coached many outstanding teams. In 1936 his Drew team posted a 10-2 record, in 1937 10-3, and in 1939 11-4. Overall, Doc tallied a 164-75 record with only five losing seasons. Widely respected as a coach, he worked with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 and 1949 on their annual program for junior all-stars. Doc also coached many athletes who went on to play semi-professional or professional baseball including, Milt Winch, Ev Stanert, and Lew Watts.
