Drew University Athletics Hall of Fame
Everett W. Stanert Jr. senior yearbook caption reads, "One of the greatest all-round athletes . . . Ev helped give Drew its reputation for excellence in athletics. A high scorer in basketball and a heavy hitter in baseball, he was nevertheless always quiet, unassuming, and a true sportsman. After the war, he again held down varsity berths in both major sports . . ." During his Drew days Ev helped form the nucleus of the men's basketball team, as well as the pitching staff of the baseball squad.
Ev was a leader in the two sports he played. The 1935/36 basketball team was Drew's first winning team, and Ev played a significant role. Called a "scoring power," he helped Drew to a 7 and 6 mark. In the 1936-37 season, Ev scored 115 total points leading the Circuit Riders to their best record of 10 and 4. In the 1936 baseball season he pitched a no-hitter against Cathedral. In a game against Webb Institute that same year he hit two homers in succession, tying the Drew record. At the time of his induction, he was still third in single-season batting average at Drew with a mark of .490 , going 24 for 49 in 1937. Ev hit .479 in 1936 and pitched four games, losing none. In 1947 he hit .478 and pitched two wins and no losses.
Ev's name constantly appeared in the Acorn as his sportsmanship was recorded time and time again. Headlines such as "Stanert Pitches Victory" and "Ev's Whipping Curves" indicate the support he gave the team. He was once described as "one of the 'greats' of Drew baseball history, . . . one of the best pitchers, and probably the best hitter that has ever trod the diamond for Drew."
